I don’t know about your kids but mine are totally obsessed with knock-knock jokes – they think they’re hilarious and absolutely love getting a laugh when telling one. So I know they’re going to go nuts for these adorable Valentine Fortune-Tellers.

Do you remember folding fortune tellers back in elementary school? (Maybe you called them cootie catchers?)
If I wasn’t busy playing M.A.S.H. with my BFFs, we were usually either folding fortune tellers or using them to find out who we were going to marry. You know, the important things that 5th graders need to know.
Recently my daughter was folding papers into little squares and it reminded me of those little fortune tellers I used to love so much, so I decided to make a few for her and impress her with my folding skills.
She got a huge kick out of playing with them, and we have been making them on a daily basis. I love these because they are so quick and easy to make, they require no materials other than a piece of paper and a pen, and they can be made for virtually any occasion.
Just change the color of the paper and what you write on it and it’s a whole new game.
Our latest one was a Valentine’s themed joke teller and it was quite a hit. I didn’t do anything fancy when I was making these at all.
I made them the same way we used to when we were kids – with just a pen and paper.
- On the top I wrote “love” in 4 different languages.
- I wrote the numbers 1-8 on the next flaps.
- Under the flaps I wrote 8 different Valentine’s knock knock jokes.
The jokes we used (plus 6 more) are on the printable below. These would make great little candy-free Valentine’s to hand out on Valentine’s Day!
How to Fold a Fortune Teller
Instructions
- Start with an 8.5 x 11 sheet of paper.
- Fold the upper left corner down to meet the bottom edge of the paper.
- Cut off the excess.
- Unfold your paper and you are left with a perfect square.
- Fold the upper right corner down to meet the lower left corner.
- Unfold the paper. The two creases will intersect showing you the center of your square.
- Turn the paper over, and fold each of the corners into the center, using the creases as your guide.
- When all 4 corners have been folded in, your paper will look like this.
- Turn your paper over again, so that the folded edges are on the bottom.
- Fold each of the corners into the center again.
- When all 4 corners have been folded in, your paper will look like this.
- Fold the entire square in half one way. Crease well.
- Now fold it in half the other way. Crease well.
- Lift the outer flaps out to give your fortune teller some shape.
- Flip it over so that the openings are on the bottom.
- Slip your fingers into the openings and move them back and forth, opening and closing the fortune teller top to bottom and side to side.
To Play
- Hold the four corners of the paper with pointer fingers in two of the pockets and thumbs in the other two pockets, keeping two pairs of corners together and the other two pairs separated.
- Ask your friend to pick one of the words on top and count how many letters are in it. Open and shut the fortune-teller while counting to that number (1 – open vertically, 2 – open horizontally, etc.)
- When you stop, ask your friend to pick one of the numbers they see and repeat the above action that number of times.
- Ask your friend to pick a number they see once again and open up that number to reveal the knock-knock joke underneath.
