Best Camp Fire Dessert Ever: Banana Boats

Did you guys know the majority of people’s childhood memories involve being outside?  It’s true! (Go ahead and think of some of your own favorite memories to prove it to yourself – it’s ok, I’ll wait.)  So why am I bringing up this fun factoid?  To drive home the point that now is the best season to be making memories with the kiddos.

Today I’m sharing one of my very favorite things about being outside during the summer as a kid – making banana boats over a camp fire.  Ever tried ’em?  They’re like s’mores taken up a notch (or ten).  The classic recipe is very basic but you can get all kinds of creative adding ingredients such as coconut shavings, peanut butter cups, sprinkles, etc., etc.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

What’s your family’s favorite summer treat?

Instructions:

Use a knife to split open your banana from one end to the other.  Stuff marshmallows, chocolate chips, and anything else you please in between the banana halves.

Cover the banana tightly with tin foil and place in the hot coals next to the fire.  It will take approximately 5 minutes or so for your boat to cook, depending on how hot your fire is.  You may end up with a few soupy bananas before you get the hang of it, but that’s all part of the memory-making adventure.

Remove your banana from the fire and get rid of the foil. Crumble some graham crackers on top, get your spoons, and dig in.  Mmm, mmm good times!
