I’m so very excited about today’s giveaway AND promotion. That’s right, there’s a discount code and a giveaway today from Mama May i, purveyor of handmade learning toys – yipee! In fact, if you just can’t wait for the end of the post, you can use the code MPMK for 15% off – but do it quick, the code expires October 5, 2012.
Now back to the fun stuff, Mama May i is hands down one of my new favorite shops. Not only are the toys gorgeous and eco-friendly (lots of wood and hand-dyed goodness here), they’re also incredible for open-ended play. The shops’s owner, Jessica, has been creating for as long as she can remember – originally helping her mother with her handmade toy store over 20 years ago. With the birth of Jessica’s children, and all the new little people in her life, she found herself searching for toys that met her educational and design standards.
Inspired by these little explorers, and her understanding of Montessori and Waldorf methodologies, she began making all of her creations with the belief that children make sense of their world through sensing their world. As a result, her handmade learning toys blend the best of developmental psychology and design to offer a unique learning through play experience.
If you’re a regular here then you know these are my kind of toys. So much so, that I just couldn’t resist asking for a few toys for my own little ones to have some fun with. Picking from the shop’s extensive inventory was no small feat (I wanted it all) but I finally settled on three items – the first of which were these If a Tree Falls in the Forest stacking and nesting toys.
As soon as C got his hands on them, he was drawn to their bright colors and graduated sizes. As I watched, he instinctually started sorting, stacking, and ordering. There were so many opportunities for play-based learning with this toy (counting, colors, size, etc.) – I was in heaven. And C was right there with me, building and destroying, lining up and counting for nearly an hour.
Next up was the Colored Cups and Balls Playset. Along with providing more opportunities for color sorting, this one is also great for fine motor development as well as dramatic play (think tools or kitchen utensils).
While we were playing, C made up a game in which we took turns lining up the containers and attempting to scoop all six matching colored balls in without any bouncing out. It’s not quite as easy as it sounds and the game lasted for a good long while.
My last pick was this set of Silkies, which are a collection of six 35″ squares of hand-dyed habotai silk. These are commonly known as “play silks” and you’ll find them in almost all quality preschools and childcare facilities. Both my kids loved playing peek-a-boo and dress up with them at toddler group classes. The large size of the Silkies make them good for so many things – capes, tents, skirts – the dramatic play possibilities are endless. If you’re wondering why there aren’t any photos of these at play, it’s because I’m saving them for C’s upcoming 4th birthday. I’m positive they’ll be a hit.
So have I properly conveyed just how wonderful these toys are? Good! Because here’s your chance to get some of your own. Mama May i is graciously offering up a $100 gift card to one lucky winner and you have 3 chances to enter: visit Mama May i and leave a comment telling us your favorite product and why, like Mama May i’s facebook page and/or become a Mamay May i twitter follower. Remember, your entries aren’t official unless you tell me about them on the rafflecopter below.
One more thing – don’t forget that Mama May i is offering up a 15% discount to all MPMK readers. Just use the code: MPMK.
But don’t wait, it’s only good for 2 weeks (expires Friday, October 5th). Don’t want to shop yet in case you win the gift card? No worries! Jessica has offered to let you apply the gift code towards a prior purchase if you win!

What an amazing site, wonderful toys. Definitely sharing with with my friend. Almost wish I was on twitter so I could follow on every level. The Little Detail Playset would be a huge hit at my house. My children never play with any actual toys so the object with this playset would be right up there alley. They are constant surprising me but what they create, crayons are never just for drawing, they are rocket ships and fences I cant wait to see what happen when they get they’re hand on this. I love the explore with me sensory box. It is a great tool for sensory exploration. What is nice about it are the tools and it is perfect for one student. A lot of my problems in my classroom with the sensory table is having too many children and the children become too excited and it defeats the purpose of a calming activity.
These are beautiful toys!
This was not my first visit to Mama May I. My kids love the rainbow sorting toy with the scoop and the sensory box, “Explore With Me.” I have my eyes on the Bakery in a Box for the holiday season.
These are great! I love the Family Box!
I love the Rainbow Regatta. They look beautifully made.
I’ve purchased once from Mama May I and yes their craft toys are brilliant. I do love all their products really… but having to pick one now… hmm… I’ll pick the “Explore With Me Sensory Box”. It is so Montessori philosophy in it, helps child develop coordination skills with the variety of scoopers and jars. And the fun thing with it is the so many kinds of things that can go with the sensory box- rice, peas, paper shreds, beads, strings, cheerios, colored sand… so many varieties that you can never run into boredom! I am sure all little ones (and big ones too~) will love spending time concentrating on exploring with this kit.
The colored cups look like something my daughter would love.
Wow! Thank you for introducing this site! I will definitely be ordering! My favorite would be the Family Box! My daughter would love it!
The sensory box looks like lots of fun.
I already have a bunch of items from Mama May I which are all awesome. I love the new fairy playset, but my little girl has a few years to go until she will be able to play with the small parts. There are already several other items on my list for Christmas and Easter though!!
Wait…. I have to pick ONE???

Kims2312@verizon.net
Hard to chose, but I think my favorite is the shoot for the rainbow kit!!
Love the balance birds and flutter fly ribbons
I like the explore with me sensory box
Ok, so I’m a new mom as of 3 months ago and I’m still discovering the world of baby/toddler toys …. and can I just say I fell in LOVE with Mama May I. Oh my gosh, I wish I owned the store. So I can’t say which my boy likes the most, since it’s all new to us at this point, but I’m looking forward to trying some out and seeing which is his favorite.
so it’s more inconvenient to get things from the States, so my little guy will have to wait till our next trip back to the US to try out these awesome toys. But I can’t wait.
I love the discovery that comes along with every toy. I’m a very creative person myself so it’s important to me to see my kids engaging their imagination and creativity as they play and learn. I love the sensory bin – I can just imagine the endless possibilities. Although for my little guy at this stage he would like the fidgets – bright colors and textures. He loves grabbing and holding material objects (not toys yet).
Unfortunately I am living overseas right now
I would love the Stack a Spool for Toddlers. My daughter is loving to stack things right now!
I visited the Mama May I site and I love the play silks. There are infinite uses in imaginary play. They can be a cape, a river, a flag, a skirt, a babydoll sling.
I love the color sorting bowls!
Oh my gosh I seriously love all of the products! I could never choose just one fave!
Gorgeous! Makes me wanna just get busy playing with them.I have no idea what we’d choose–I’d consult the little guys for that!
I love the color sorting, baking box and color match! Such cute and vibrant colors! How inviting!
Play silks, play silks, PLAY SILKS!!
Make a Match Nature could be used in our family often!
Definitely the play silks for our house! There are so many forts and tents being built with lots of knights and superheroes running around. The play silks would be amazing.
Beautiful items! I love the attention to details, especially in the Fairy Friends Set and the Ladybug Learning Play Set…and more, hard to choose just one!!
Thanks for the opportunity!

Their toys are great …I love their Rainbow Regatta!
Love these – they would be great for my toddler!
The toys are great I would get my son the explore with me sensory box and for my daughter I would get some play silks or the clothes pin color match.
I visited the Mama May I site and I love the Ladybug Learning Playset. My toddler is working on colors and numbers, so I love that this set includes “learning” about the two through play. Plus it is really cute.
Oh, man. There are too many great things to choose from! I think my daughter would get a kick out of the colored cups and balls playset.
I love them all, but my favorite is the play silks!
So hard to choose! I think my daughter would love all of them!
I truly love everything – but if I had to choose, it would be the colored cups and balls playset. I’ve had three girls up till now – and it has been easy to find toys to develop their interests – however, my little one is a boy and right now he is so interested in putting things into something – taking them out -and then starting all over. He is definitely a hands-on learner and he can occupy himself HAPPILY doing this sort of thing for quite a while. He would absolutely love this (and, truthfully, all of their wonderful toys).
Thanks for sharing!

I’ve had my eye on the crooked little rainbow! I could see my kids playing with it in SO many different ways!
I really love all of these toys, they are wonderful! After looking around the website I must say my favorite toy is the colored cups and balls set. I am a 12-24 month old teacher at a daycare and I love any toy I can use with my students to develop their motor skills. The students also love the challenge!

I can’t pick just one…love them ALL! But, since my daughter’s favorite activity is sticking things inside other things, I guess I’d have to pick the colored cups and balls. She would adore it!

Amazing products. Can’t decide if my fav is the cups/balls set or the sensory box. Both would be right up my kiddos’ alley. Love em!
I love the handmade sensory color sorting playset. It’s one of those purchases that has many purposes!
If I had to choose – which I loathe doing – they all look wonderful for my 3yo and 7mo old I’d say the Sight & Sound Cards or the Shoot for the Rainbow set OR Colored Cups & Balls.
I love the idea and the design of the toys. It’s very functional and suitable for kids. Also the color is so lovely and the most important is educational toys. Love it!
I would just love to have the sensory box for both of my girls. They would love it!!! And some of the sorting toys to go in it!!
I love the colored cups and balls playset… and so would my son and daughter!
I love the flutterfly streamers! Perfect for outdoor princesses and dancers alike.

Love the sensory box and all the and stacking sets!
That should say all the sorting and stacking sets! I love how open ended they are and how they are colorful, fun, and educational.
I love the chickadee playset in blue and the sensory box!!
Love the my little nursery box at Mama Mays! Perfect for tiny learning hands! I have a 22 month old baby boy who is now learning what his nose is really for and every time he sees a flower, real or fake he smells it. This is such a clever way to teach about nature, colors & coordination but what I really love is that it also teaches gentleness. Something else we are currently learning
The colored cups and balls look great. My lo loves pouring things these days
Make a Match Toddler Zoo= we love matching, and animals!
the rainbow people
Love all the different unique learning toys. Would love to use them for my 1 yr old and 4 yr old.
