I'm a Woman with a Plan (and a Routine and a System)

photo via Martha Stewart
I've been trying to figure out how to write this without sounding ridiculous.  What I want to say is this: I finally did it you guys, I completely and totally organized my life!  It took a lot of hard work and a lot of late nights but I now have a plan, routine, or system for everything.
  • I've compiled and categorized enough healthy, inexpensive and easy recipes that I have a 90 day dinner menu (complete with theme nights like pasta Monday and slow-coooker Thursday) and I have the grocery lists to match.
  • There is nothing in my house that we don't use.  I've ferociously weeded out the clutter and sent it packing via Craig's List or Goodwill.
  • Everything I didn't get rid of is now beautifully organized into colorfully labeled containers.  If you're ever visiting and you need something, just ask me - I totally know where it all is.
  • I now have a weekly schedule with time carved out for blogging, housework, play dates, park time, library time, and other activities we've been wanting to try but never got around to.
  • For those days we stay home, we've got a dependable routine that the kids can rely on.  It includes stuff like art time, outside time, story time and bath time.
  • Remember when I told you C isn't really down with napping anymore and I was worried about ever getting anything done again?  I completely solved that problem by putting together some genius quiet time kits (one for each day of the week so he doesn't get bored).  They're crammed with busy bags, DIY audio books, and learning activities he can do independently.
  • I finally got our budget down to a science using a combination of the cash envelope system and mint.com.  We're saving tons! (and while I was at it I updated our wills, life insurance, and retirement planning).
  • Thanks to evernote and some other handy apps, I will never again miss an appointment or birthday. (If something does somehow sneak by me, I have a birthday closet with pre-bought gifts and cards - thanks to the new budget and organization I now have the space and money for it.)
  • I also joined a gym and started exercising regularly (part of the new weekly schedule).  The kids love playing at the drop off center while I'm burning calories.
  • I went through all 2,000 of my digital photos, edited them, imported them to yearly photobooks and backed them all up online.  I've also caught up on my personal blog and am regularly contributing to it.
  • Last but not least, the hubs and I have a set-in-stone date night that we never miss and we've recently instituted family game night.
Seriously, it's been a long time coming but today I stood in the middle of my living room, looked around the house and admired what I've accomplished with a huge goofy grin on my face.

And then I woke up. DAMN. IT.

Sounds good though, doesn't it? I should probably get on that.

P.S. The top photo is from Martha.  I bet she doesn't have cruel dreams like that - since she really is that organized.  Also, I hear she doesn't actually sleep.

UPDATE:  You're probably wondering why, if this was all a cruel joke, are there links to some of the projects above?  The joke's on me, it would seem, because in getting all of that out of my system, I (and many others) became mysteriously motivated to actually attempt to do some of it.

You can read more about the unique way we intend to do it at How I Organized My ENTIRE Life - The Next Chapter and if you'd like to get in on the action, you can follow us linearly and start with PROJECT #1 or simply click on any of the active links in the list above (the idea is to add more and more as time goes on.)

You can also join us over at the POYEL facebook group

Last, but not least, if you have a blog and you'd like to share the experience with your readers, you can grab a button here.

  1. Ha! You really had me! I was reading in disbelief how anyone could get all that done. Martha is as imperfect as the rest of us. She has a staff of people do to all that kind of stuff. I much rather sleep than have a completely perfect life.

  2. I totally believed you! You ARE that amazing. I kept thinking,"Crap, this is all the stuff I keep saying I'll do, but I can't get my act together. How'd she do it? I want to know the secret!" Glad to see you're keepin' it real, though the dreams are nice while they last! :0)

  5. I have to tell you your blog is one of my top three! I talk about it all the time and this post will have me talking all week! It reminds me of a conversation I had with my husband about the magazine Real Simple. I love this magazine, and have to admit I was a bit crushed at first when he said, "That's ridiculous! There's nothing simple about that magazine!" Thanks for reminding us that life really is messy -- it's not just the kids ;)

  33. oh my, I was starting to feel a little envious. That was awesome. Nice to know that I am not the only one with lofty goals.

    ReplyDelete
  34. So cute! I must admit I was in awe and then pleasantly pleased to find we were both still in the same planes or life. Ironically, I've actually started implementing many of these solutions. I just moved and although exhausting, moving is a great opportunity to downsize and get rid of clutter.

There is a book I've been listening to called "Get It Done Guys, Nine Steps to Working Less and Doing More" by Stever Robbins. He is funny to listen to and his tricks for organizing life are fantastic and very doable.

So although it may be a dream, the life you list is obtainable and something adventurous to work towards. :)

  45. LOl I actually believed you because I am ALMOST to this point. I recently completed a HUGE home management Binder and Recipe Binder (close to 300 pages each) I decluttered and did a deep clean of the house (only have our bedroom left- my worst enemy) I have began photo collage projets to hang in every room of the house, I am still trying to get my schedules worked out so they work best for us but do have daily menu plans for 4 weeks wrote up, a schedule for exerciseing, my husbands work, play and learn activities for my toddler,Cleaning schedule, daily to do schedule, daily chore checklist, and I have a school calendar waiting to be filled in when my husband and I BOTH start back FULL TIME in March (? Hopefully maybe July if he doesn't get finished with some testing he has to get done for his work). I know that in time though we will find the perfect fits for us. We also just found a babysitter for SET-IN-STONE date nights (providing he isn't deployed or called in). We've made a 4 year plan to be DEBT FREE!! and are working on getting a budget in order. I probably will still miss birthdays and appts ( I am after all still a mommy who on more days then not only works on half a brain) but I am less likely to now with my home management binder. I am starting making quite bags next week and I guess you could say I backed up my photos... I just put them all on photobucket so my mom could see them too because I got rid of my facebook. I have not edited them all and put them in photo books though and I doubt I ever will really. I'm not near perfect and yes my house still is messy ALL the time in one place or another... as I said I haven't hit my room yet, I have a sink full of dishes I just couldn't bring myself to do last night and my daughter is sitting in the middle of a toy hurricane behind me at this moment. BUT life is getting on track and feels so nice. If you want to hear more details and think of ideas to actually LIVE your dream I am just starting up a blog (like seriously I have all the background info but today is my first post): http://freeliferevolution.blogspot.com/

  46. I think this post is amazing! I thought about sending my daughter to your house for boot camp on playing quietly and independently without getting bored! Good/Bad dream :) I stood in the middle of my living room today too ... it wasn't in my dreams, and I didn't sigh in relief!!!

    I heart you.
I found this via my Pinterest with the caption: "How I Organized My Entire Life" witty and encouraging, vs. condescending & impossible.
So I clicked and "ran" right over here to wait for you to tell me how you did it.
I read your list, my heart beating a bit quicker with each entry. Everything you listed, I want to accomplish. I was waiting for the process of how you managed to do it, what system you used and then I got to: And then I woke up. DAMN. IT.
And I wasn't sure. Wait, what? Woke up? What does that mean? SHE DIDN'T DO THIS AND LAY IT OUT FOR ME IN SIMPLE, EASY TO FOLLOW TERMS?!?!?
I still heart you. And you inspired me. One task at a time, I will organize my life.

  102. Since I just "met" you, I totally believed it. I have been working for the past 10 years and still am not organized. But my new mantra is "why not me?" Why not me organized, why not me thin, etc!

    ReplyDelete
  103. WOW. Saw this on Pinterest, and of course was reeled in. Started reading and with each passing # I hated you more. ;-) I was thinking no freaking way, I'm such a FAILURE! Sorry, but I felt a HUGE sigh of relief getting to your "I woke up" part!!! THANK GOD!!! I too wish I could be more organized, but you know what sometimes I'm glad I'm just organized enough that I typically know where everything is, it's only on occasion I miss an appointment, or am late for something, and there's only about one week a month where I get behind on my groceries so we have to eat out all week. I can live with that. I think life would be a bit mundane if things were THIS organized. Right???? Plus, then when could I sink into the couch with my fish bowl glass of wine and not feel guilty if everything was perfect....? ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  104. LOL, good one....I was thinking, what a bore life would be if everything were so well planned....besides I would never be able to keep up with it all and if anything went wrong, I would be very upset....not worth it. Grin.

  108. When you're getting your life organized it is a great time to think about life insurance. There's a website where you can answer a few basic questions and get a rate quote comparison among major life insurance companies. I work for this company and we help a lot of people. http://bit.ly/ACmDw6

  109. heehee, I sent this post to all my non-blogging friends and quite a few read it and got back to me. I so enjoyed this post because I too have been on a bit of an organising mission over the last few months, but am no-where near my end goal. Seeing it all written out like this made me smile. Us Mom's sure do set ourselves ultra high standards and mammoth tasks and then feel so guilty when we aren't getting it right. :)

  114. Ditto to all comments above. Started off feeling inspired, which quickly turned to discouraged, and now i just feel like I'm a member of a huge cult of other people who feel exactly the way I do- it'll never get done!!

  116. I just found your blog via Pinterest...and I have to say, I love it!
At first I was feeling a bit down on myself, very jealous, and really lazy!
I'm so glad to hear that I am not the only one with big dreams and little ambition. Thanks for sharing...and making so many of us feel more normal;)

  117. Reading all of that I was seriously thinking, this woman has too much time on get hands if she truly accomplished all of this.....along with a
Personal chef, nanny, trainer, housekeeper etc. Loved it! I'm so in on this. I recently started working outside the house full time with a 1/2 hr commute each way. I worked from home for 5 1/2 years. I now struggle more than ever to juggle everything! Organization is the key, but I think i've lost that key under a pile of papers in the dining room.

But now that I know you are a fellow work in progress, I'm really excited about progressing along with you lol. I've grabbed your button to put on my blog tinkandbubba.blogspot.com , it's pretty new, so I'm not sure how much traffic you will get from it, but I will definitely give it a try.

So I've spent the last few days thinking that you really WERE this organized and so excited that you were going to let me in on the secret. I even told my mom!! I'm still just as excited to go through the process with you, you've really motivated me.

  131. This was absolutely refreshing and invigorating! You know that whole "envision your dream" so that you can better accomplish it? For years I've struggled with vision in this area, to know what it would look and feel like to have it all done. You completely captured it! Thank you, let the projects begin!

  136. Brilliant, funny witty. I really fell for it, thinking gosh how do you do it! Perhaps we can all aim to tick three off of that big to do list.

    ReplyDelete
  137. LOL..I was like, "Siiiiiiiiiigh! I wonder if she'll send me her 90 days worth of recipes and shopping list." Daaang! Well, if you ever DO get around to doing that, maybe you'll post the recipes. :) Good luck!

  138. I was totally in awe! I was wanting to hire you to organize my life! LOL

    ReplyDelete
  139. Wow, totally scared and annoyed at the same time. Scared that someone could actually do this and annoyed that someone would actually attempt to have their children that scheduled. Lol.
I am so relieved to find out that it is (was) a dream.....now off to live my almost totally disorganized life!

  141. I was getting so mad reading this! Like WTF? Way to rub it in all our faces... Then I kept reading and laughed out loud that I am so gullible! Thanks for the laugh and the encouragement that even though I'm not where I want to be, I try everyday!

    ReplyDelete
  142. Oh, this is funny. At first I thought wow, that's impressive. Then, what a jerk for flaunting this, then -- well, she's obviously taking drugs to accomplish all this. Glad to know that you're sober and still a bit disorganized.

You are awesome;)) Totally begin this process every week...then the ADD sets in, & I HAVE to start a task I am trying to "routinely schedule". This so nice to know so many of us are united in our hopes, dreams & struggles;) WE CAN DO IT...probably after the kids move out. But hey, its good to have dreams.

    1. Hi Jessica,

We're so glad to have you! Each link in the post above will take you to all the posts on that particular subject. They don't need to be followed in any type of order, as we've been jumping around a bit. Hope that helps.

  165. I definitely want in on this!! I don't have any kids of my own but my husband and I are just now starting to get into the foster/adoption process. Life already has me thinking like the rest of you...why can't I just get it all together!! I have to do something before we do start getting kids in our house. So looking forward to getting organized together. I've tried every idea I've read but their all crazy and take more energy and time than anyone I know has. I think if we work together, real people who don't have nannies and housekeepers, and chefs, can actually come up with sensible ways to get and stay organized. Looking forward to my future organized life

  166. We've started doing this at our house and in our studio, but I think we could definitely use some help (aka accountability & goals.) We're definitely looking forward to reading and to participating.

  170. Haha! As I was reading along I was wishing I had more organizational skills like YOU! Thanks for the laugh this morning. That all sounds great, but tough to do when kids, and life, and interruptions are constant. My life sure doesn't look like a magazine so when someone comes by and it's messy, I just say, "Come on it! Looks like we live here... CUZ WE DO!" Great post!
