Learn Something New with Your Child This Summer (Giveaway & Discount)

Create a Juggling Photo via Simple Kids
Happy Friday everyone, first off I want to say thank you for all your kind comments about the Creativity Center.  We’re looking forward to utilizing it to ward off boredom while injecting some art and learning into our summer.
Along those same lines, I’m super excited to share with you another great way to keep kinds thinking and creating this summer.  Through the Lens: Explorations in Photo Journaling is a truly innovative new e-course offering by Mariah at Playful Learning (who, you may remember, was the original source of inspiration for our creativity center).  In a nutshell, this is a 4-week course you take along with your child to “explore a variety of photography and writing techniques while creating and adding to their own photo journals”.
Here’s what I really love about it:
  • It provides a great introduction to writing & photography -  For many kids, this course will be their first exposure to photography and creative writing.  They’ll learn new skills and very possibly develop new interests.  Plus, they’ll walk away with a completed photo journal to document all of their hard work.
  • It’s a chance for a memorable joint learning experience with your child – geared towards children ages 6-12, this is the perfect opportunity to slow down and take the time to discover something new with your kids while they are still eager and willing to do so.
  • It’s a self-esteem booster – As Mariah explains, the goal for the course is to “nurture positive self-expression through photography, writing, and art—to discover and develop a strong sense of voice… This course will be dynamic and offer many ways for the participants to showcase their work and interact with one another in a safe and protected environment. Participants will receive password protected accounts on VoiceThread where they can post their pictures, record their stories and comment on one another’s work.”
And now for the really good news – Mariah has graciously offered up one free spot in her summer session (taking place every Wednesday in July).  And if you don’t win, she’ll still give you a 10% discount for being an MPMK reader if you register on or before June 10th.  Simply use the code MODERNPARENT when registering.
To enter the giveaway leave a comment below telling me who you’d take the course with and be sure to leave an email address.
For extra entries subscribe to MPMK, become a facebook fan, or a twitter follower.  Please leave one comment per entry.  The contest will end at midnight EST on Wednesday, June 8th.  Thanks and good luck!

Oh my kids would live and die for this really, they are all photography mad (can’t think where they get it from!!!)… It would be very hard to pick just one!!! But I think my daughter who recently got a camera for her tenth birthday would be the pick around here: Some sweet mother daughter time would definitely work for us amidst all the boys!!!

This would be great for my daughter, who has dsylexia, and learns through creative methods. She is 8, and loves to write and draw. We haven’t tried photography. Anyway, thanks.

How fun!!! I have a seven year old son who struggles with handwriting and journaling – it’s a BIG challenge for us. This sounds like a perfect way to make “practice” fun and interesting for him! So excited to try!

My 7year old daughter is my crafty, artsy reincarnate! I just bought myself a DSLR and passed down my point and shoot to her. I would love to take his class for some great “girl time” while feeding into her creative spirit and teaching her how to use photography for “everyday.” great idea for our summer journal this year!

I too would love to take the course with my six year old soon-to-be first grader as a super creative way to keep him engaged and learning, which he certainly needs, and I could use the creative push myself :)

I’d take it with my 12 year old son. He is working on the photography merit badge for boy scouts and could use what he learns on his summer trips. (hoomeye-at-hotmail-dot-com)
